Athos by ObsidianSerpent Athos by ObsidianSerpent
Acrylic on canvas board.

Athos from the BBC Musketeers.  (Was slightly hampered by being unable to find a site with decent screenshots for reference, so ended up having to use the only nice photo of him that I could find.)

So so beautiful!! You truly have a fantastic gift! I always really struggle with getting facial features in the right place in the initial pencil drawing before i start painting...you completely nail it!Heart  If you don't mind me asking, do you have any tips in regards to copying/laying down pencil outlines?

Thank you so much! One of the most beautiful Musketeer pieces I've ever seen!Love :happybounce:

Thank you so much for such a nice comment, you're really kind.

I use a ruler to measure out the features and get them to scale and in the right place. (I do that on paper as you can't erase on a canvas board as you just get a grubby mess). Once I think I've got them okay I trace the drawing in a very basic way and transfer it to the canvas board. I don't have much detail at that point, just where everything is. Then I build up the likeness (hopefully!) in the paint.

I think the proportions are the most important thing, it's how you can recognise someone from a distance even when you can't see their face clearly.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes you can have it so close that you can't see/measure what's wrong, but it still doesn't look like them.  :)  I've had quite a few of those too.

Thank you so so much for replying!! (seriously, you made my day!) talking to such a fantastic artist is just so mind blowing, your art is just so perfect in every way, I'm actually shaking a little!! I can't thank you enough for sparing the time to reply and I'll defiantly give your method a go (if you don't mind of course!) you're such an inspiration, I can only dream of being as talented as you!!
Good luck for the future and have a beautiful day!!x

It's really sweet of you to say that, but honestly, I'm not that great. I look at other artists on deviant-art and just despair that I'll ever quite get the hang of it.

And do pop over to chat any time, it's always nice to talk about art, (I don't see anyone in "real life" who is art-y so chats on here are really nice).  I really like the D'Artagnan and Dean Winchester art in your gallery. You've caught them thinking, if you know what I mean. There's something going on behind their expressions. It's very nicely done.

I'm especially impressed
that you drew it on canvas :)

Thank you very much.  Yes, it's paint and canvas board.

(I did rather fancy having a dabble with digital art, but unfortunately this computer is so old and basic that it doesn't seem to have the memory/capacity to cope with that and just keeps freezing every two minutes.  I don't mind too much, as I do like "real" paint, but I would have liked to have been able to have a play with digital art as well.)

You're welcome!

What a pity! I think you'd be very good in drawing digital too :)
But I think it's good to do a bit of both.
You can learn much from traditional but
play a lot more with digital.
Anyway great work and keep it up :)

Yeah, it was quite frustrating, I saved up and bought myself a Wacom Bamboo and was so looking forward to really getting the hang of it.  But as soon as I try and do something like creating more than one layer the computer can't cope and just freezes and closes the paintshop programme down.

Oh well, one day when I get a nice shiny new computer I'll blow the dust off the Bamboo and give it another go.  :)

And many thanks for the kind words and the encouragement.  :)

Oh well, that's some bad luck :/
But who knows, someday...? ;)
I'm looking forward to see digital stuff from you :)
And till then of course your traditional drawings!

Thank you very much.  (I always have trouble painting people from the back...it sounds as though it should be easy, but the back of a bloke's head+neck+shoulders is ridiculously hard to get right.)

Yes, I wanted my RL to be anon from my fandom life. My sis gave out my user ID to people, and too many people knew me as texasislandr anyway, so I changed my AO3, DA, and tumblr to texasfandoodler and only left my LJ because I can lock post on there ^^

Free to fandom as I please now \o/

I can totally understand that.  While one isn't at all ashamed of fandom artwork, that doesn't mean you want people at work etc trawling around it.  (plus there is a big prejudice against fandom stuff by non-fandom peeps.  There is still the trainspotter/loser prejudice attached to anything fandom.)

There was a bit on the most recent episode where Athos, Porthos and Aramis were watching D'artagnan duel, and Porthos and Aramis were moving and talking and smiling, and Athos was just standing totally still and a little apart...  I find that slight distance/reserve about him very interesting as a character.  (not to mention he has lovely eyes    )

And many thanks for the nice comment about the painting.

Ohhh!  Thank you for that site link it was exactly the type of thing that I was looking for and couldn't find.  (Though still not enough Athos on it, and he's my favourite. However there  is a really yummy photo of him on there that I haven't seen before and will have to paint I think.)

Thank you.  I probably will have a go at the other musketeers as I've gotten quite into the series at the moment.  (The first two episodes I thought it was terrible...and then suddenly it seemed to really improve and it's rather super now.)
