The Mistletoe Prince by ObsidianSerpent The Mistletoe Prince by ObsidianSerpent
Acrylic on canvas board.

The blurb beneath the previous painting (Consultation) explains what project this was created for, (The sequel to the story "Light of Arthur" by the amazing Venivincere), so I won't repeat it all here.)

This painting is a companion piece to my painting of Arthur as the Oak King.
[link]

The idea is that Arthur is the Oak King, and when he takes Merlin as his consort, Merlin becomes the Mistletoe Prince.

It's said that Mistletoe was sacred for the druids. It only grows in apple or oak trees. (There's a whole fertility symbolism attached to it...mainly because the translucent white berries resemble semen, which is why we kiss under it now.)

A little bit appropriate for the season what with the mistletoe and all, so I shall wish everyone a happy Christmas, or Yule, or whatever you happen to celebrate.

Oh my goodness, I didn't know that about mistletoe before. *falls over laughing* Society is odd indeed. I love the Celtic knotwork in your pieces. As always, love the lighting!

Gotta love the old religions, it's often all about sex.  :)

Thank you very much.  I love paintings with interesting light.  Some day I'm gonna try a rainy night scene.  I haven't yet, but I love that sort of atmosphere and lighting.  Hard to paint though.

Again, if ever you have prints made of these please keep me in mind. I would love to collect all of your work. They are truly great inspirations for stories. :)

Thank you so much. At the moment I don't have any plans to sell them as prints.

But I deliberately don't watermark anything. So that if anyone wants to print anything off then hopefully they can print themselves off a decent copy.

Thank you. Since I worked out how to do gem shading, it's now very tempting to just stick 'em in wherever I can.

Celtic designs are really complicated and precise, so this is an impression of celtic knotwork rather than the actual thing. Hopefully it gives the same sort of effect though.

Ah, i attempted the Celtic knot once -it really didn't end well- but your take on it is still impressive.

And as for the gem shading i would stay sticking them where ever you can is an excellent idea! :D

If you want to do "proper" ones then you have to draw a grid...with lots of dots...

I did try and do "proper" celtic knotwork on the Uther and the Boar painting. but even there it's a bit botched, as it's not totally regular and even and there's a long space in the circular design that really shouldn't be there, (which is where I accidentally muffed it up).

Still, as I said to my friend today, I've decided my life-motto is, "Oh sod it, that'll do."

Ah, when it comes to dot's i can't say im a fan. I never got along with dot-to-dot's either, they where to repetitive with the straight lines and all.

Well muffed up or not it wasn't that noticable, it's still an amazing piece of art :D

O.o I don't believe that's your motto. Your art is to good for a "Oh sod it, that'll do" motto!

So is there a squeal to Light of Arthur,or is it just that one story?

:iconobsidianserpent:
ObsidianSerpent Featured By Owner Jan 13, 2012
Well the sequel to Light of Arthur was going to be written for Big Bang 2011...then it was going to be written for Christmas 2011...

Now I think Veni has moved onto other stuff and other ideas, (she's doing a completely different idea for Big Bang 2012) So I don't think the sequels are going to get written.

In a way, it's a shame, as it was a brilliant story. But I know myself that sometimes you have big plans and it just doesn't work out and the enthusiasm just goes, and you have to move on and do something different.

Her new stuff is really lovely too though, so I think it's onwards and upwards.
