The Wheel of Fortune by ObsidianSerpent The Wheel of Fortune by ObsidianSerpent
Acrylic on canvas board

Part of The Magician and the Hanged Man series

During the French revolution.  Magical manacles restrain them to prevent Merlin freeing them. (This experience led to Arthur's subconscious drive to learn escapology during the Victorian era)

Thank you.  There's a subsection in my gallery for "The magician and the hanged man", which this painting is a part of.  It was a vague idea I had for a story where they are reincarnated in several eras.   (The fic doesn't exist unfortunately, but I've been dipping my toe into having a go at writing recently, (badly!  :D  ) so I might actually have a go at writing it when my current writing-y thing is finished.)

Your French Revolution paintings are marvelous.  I am fascinated by them and how you capture the graphic Reign of Terror in the background and those dreaded revolutionaries who love chopping off the heads of the aristocracy.  Your paintings bring out the hatred the revolutionaries had for the aristocrats.  I noticed that there is a lady on the scaffold who seems to be enjoying her job as well.  Looks like the two men are doomed.

Thank you very much.  I read all the Scarlet Pimpernel novels as a child and absolutely loved them.  I definitely wouldn't have wanted to live through that period, but as a subject for novels and paintings, it can provide a lot of ideas.

(Well, I'm hoping they get away...though of course, hardly anyone did.)

I love that this experience caused his interest in escapology. You could make a e-book with the paintings and just include those little tidbits above each one. Everything in order and made even more effective. I wonder how Arthur came to be shackled too.

(Honestly, I wish I had the skill to bring your ideas to written life. All the potential angst and beautiousness gives me pangs. As you can tell.. I am conflicted. I'd like to attempt it but I'm afraid I won't do it justice. Assuming you'd ever want to give it a go. No pressure either way.)

What eras do you plan on painting? Will it continue until modern times?

That's a nice idea...it depends a lot on how many more I end up doing.

Actually, that's a very good point about why Arthur has a magical shackle on too.  They'd only have to put it on Merlin, Arthur could have a normal one...  Unless maybe, they know someone magical is going to try and help Merlin and Arthur escape...  Maybe Gaius never had to give up his magic in this life and is much more powerful than he was back in Camelot times...?

I can't remember what I've read of yours...my memory is absolutely TERRIBLE.  I'm sure I have though, could you remind me and send me something maybe?

I don't know what other eras they'll be in yet, and I haven't thought as far as the end, so I don't know where they'd end up.  Mind you, if I did end up working with someone writing the story, that leaves it nice and loose for them to take it where they want to as well.

Perhaps Arthur was desperate and tried to learn magic to help Merlin escape and someone caught him. Gaius might get to save the day. Or it could be Morgana (And maybe Gwen if she and Morgana have made amends) that helps them to try and make up for Camelot doins.

Is it bad that I'm kind of glad you don't remember what I've written?

I posted my beta'd fic last night. It's not one my favourites. I may rewrite it in the future but I just wanted to get something out there as the last time was over a year ago.
archiveofourown.org/works/1148… (Tagging for stories is so difficult. I had/have no idea what to properly classify that story as.)

I should probably email you something that I did show you before. Get you properly wary. ;) (I can see the end of your series being modern day with Merlin and Arthur showing up at your door. Comical happenings ensue and things end well although you may be traumatised forever. lmao I wouldn't do that to you but it does make me laugh.)

I watched Some Like It Hot the night before last and it reminded me of you as I remember you loving Tony Curtis.

I've been a bit snowed under with work and stuff, so I've only just had a chance to pop across and read your fic, AWWWWW, that was absolutely lovely.  I do hope you get into writing and write more stories.

Some like it hot is a classic film, brilliant!  Though I haven't seen it for a long time.   Yeah, I used to love Curtis, both he and Lemmon are genius in that film.

This one just killed me by its beauty, I am in love with it, OMG, Merlin and Arthur during French Revolution, too much happiness for ma lol ;)
OMG those faces, so realistic, so beautiful, with Merlin's lock and Arthur's pony tail (don't know if it's the right word to qualify it but you see what I mean :) )
Is it a big canvas ? You probably gave it away already
It now joins my favorite arts of yours :)

I'm so pleased that you liked it.  I love the clothes back then, and they suit the boys very well, (and I do like long hair on men).

It's not a very big canvas, 25cms x 30cms, so the details like their eyes were done with a teeny tiny brush.

OMG I also *looooooove* long hair on men ;)

Well, if someday you want to sell it or give it away, I take an option on it (it's small and I absolutely fell in love with it)

By the way, you're very gifted to be able to make so many details within such a small canvas :)

Well, at the moment it's hanging on the wall in the passage next to the execution painting so I've got no plans to give this one away, at least at the moment.   (If I do decide to then I will let you know first.)

Thank you.  I had the dickens of a job with Arthur's face, I spent hours fiddling about with it and couldn't get it to look like him at all.  I finally had to completely paint it out with white paint and then repaint it.  (I thought for a while I was just going to have to ditch the picture as I just couldn't make him work.)

I'm really glad you like the story, it's quite fun to be able to go anywhere and not be tied to someone else's idea.   (Although that can be good fun too of course.)

I almost always have a dickens of a time with Arthur's face.  He's just not easy for me to draw.  Not that Colin is particularly easy, either, lol, but I seem to (generally) have less trouble with him.  But I'd definitely say that persistence won out for you, because the likeness in this really is fantastic!

I find Arthur's jawline really difficult, you get an overall impression of a fairly square-jawed guy, but often, depending on the pose/way he's looking, his jaw looks way softer and more rounded.  And he can look totally different from photo to photo...

Whereas Colin somehow always seems to look Coliney.  (Though in those model shoots where his hair covers up his ears completely then it seems to change his facial proportions and it doesn't look like him at all to me.)

I agree, I find Arthur's essential Arthur-ness harder to capture.  And yes, mostly Colin is very Colin-y, but you do need the ears, as Amph and I found with her Assasin's Creed crossover.  When you cover those ears and the hairline it get to be less obviously him, lol.  Maybe that's why the stealth beanie worked for so long?  :D

Colin looks really different in the photos I've seen from Mojo too.  Which is odd as you can see his ears in it.  I can't figure out if it's the height of the hairstyle which gives his face different proportions, or whether it's because his face looks so thin at the moment.  I'm tending to think it may be an effect of the hairstyle, since he looks like Colin again when he's wearing a beanie.

(I hadn't seen Amph's Assassin's Creed picture, I just went to look.  Oh, that's nice, I shall have to comment.)

Thank you very much.  :)

No, I haven't written anything down yet.  There are certain scenes that I can see in my head and I know are coming up, but the ins and outs of the story are very fluid so far.

Mind you, I suppose it doesn't really matter what I think in a way as anyone looking at it can interpret the paintings how they want to.  I was thinking that Morgana had joined the revolution in order to get revenge on Uther and Arthur...but maybe instead she infiltrated it in order to try and free Arthur after he was taken...  either idea works equally well...

I look forward to seeing what you do with those scenes, the story so far has been lovely.

The liberty of interpretation is nice, and opens the door for so many possibilities.  Thank you for sharing!

Aww thank you!  (So sorry I've taken so long to reply, the whole lead-up-to-Christmas effect is kicking in now.    )

I like the idea that an image can be taken/interpreted in multiple ways.  It's one of the great things ABOUT pictures I think; that there's this openness to how you interpret them, and that two people won't necessarily see the same thing in a painting.  I love that.

They're in a tumbril on their way to the guillotine in the background, (in the last painting, Morgana was a member of the revolution, and she has made sure that Arthur and Merlin have been put on the death list.)

Whether they get away or not...I don't know...depends on whether I decide that they're immortal, or whether they are being reincarnated...  :)
